What has been written about genetics and the Deaf community up to now? An up-to-date literature review is being undertaken to take into account new developments in genetics. Our focus is:

- General developments in genetics (brief/outline);

- Developments and issues in genetics and disability (this part will include deaf genes);

- Issues and developments in the specific field of genetics and deafness;

- Bioethical issues and developments in genetics and deafness;

- We are also carrying out an analysis of social policy related documents that cover the field of genetics and Deaf people: for example, from the Human Genetics Commission or the Government.

Included in the literature review are studies that have analysed the role of the media, particularly academic literature on the relationship between the mass media and reporting on genetic science.  The review will also examine the most important literature concerning disabled persons and selective reproduction practices.
